There are many ways to detail buildings. We don’t recommend wrapping unless an exceptional circumstance presents itself, and then very carefully. The image below shows a luxuriously made, brass covered entrance sign, wrapping a regular steel mounting plate. Of course condensation and weather has rusted the regular steel mounting plate underneath the wrapped cover.
Clearly, once the rust started, the maintenance crew has repainted the wall to cover the stains... which of course reemerge. Once this kind of rust begins, the only way to stop it is to remove the sign and rebuild it. Stains, however curiously visual, are not the same as a well weathered patina.
